2.4 Membrella, 2008

Membrella – Daniel Coll I Capdevila, Gudjon Erlendsson, Mattia Gambardella , Pavel Hladik, Jeffrey Turko – OCEAN, 2008-09

MM is designed as a partial enclosure space that offers a spatial and environmental experience similar to one working under the canopy of a tree. The deployable MM-Tent rests delicately in place supported by the stiletto-like frame. The minimal fabric patches combine together into an array that organises the space into differently modulated zones that are further defined in combination with a sculpted base of surfaces that can be used for sitting, working and resting. The levels of visual transparency between spaces change as one moves around and through the membrane array, which creates varied light conditions and degrees of exposure or privacy. When deployed, tension and compression forces are finely balanced in this umbrella-type structure.
The team is currently working on the design of a full-scale prototype with Buro Happold in London as engineering consultant.
