1.5 Membranes with Nested Minimal Holes

Michael Hensel and Achim Menges with Dip4 Architectural Association, 2004-06

The Membrane Spaces research was initiated by Michael Hensel and Achim Menges in a series of form-finding experiments that focused on continuous membranes with minimal holes that serve to connect the membrane with itself in order to accomplish complex spatial arrangements, as well as on multiple and parametrically varies membranes with minimal holes – either directly connected or arrayed next to one another. The research involved also nesting minimal holes of different sizes within one another.

These experiments took place at the Architectural Association in London, as well as in the AA’s workshop facilities in Hooke Park in Dorset.
